About the qualification program
The first goal of the qualification program is to provide excellent multidisciplinary training to PhD students. Research teams of the CRC with outstanding expertise and international reputation offer our PhD students a broad spectrum of training opportunities tailored to match the specific needs of the individual research project. This research-project-directed qualification program will promote rapid progress and enable PhD students to cross disciplinary borders. Secondly, the qualification program stimulates interaction and collaboration between CRC teams located at different research centers with expertise in fundamental, preclinical and clinical research. Thirdly, academic lectures, annual retreats, international meetings and lab internships immerse our PhD students in a multidisciplinary community of scientists to broaden horizons and stimulate vision. This will promote scientific collaborations on the national and international level. Lastly, we aim to inspire our PhD students to develop their research skills towards self-reliance, originality, and innovation. They will be able to integrate their broad knowledge from different disciplines, develop new ideas based on their research findings, identify outstanding scientific research questions, design new experimental approaches and strive for discovery and innovation.
The established graduate programs at CRC partner institutions will provide the essential educational schemes in scientific, social and cultural competences, such as good scientific practice, project management, scientific writing, introduction to statistical packages (R and MATLAB), career development as a scientist in academia or industry, media and communication, gender equality and diversity training modules (minimum requirement of 3 soft skill courses within 4 years, with at least 1 day for each course).

The Annual Retreat 2020 takes place at Congress Centrum Alpbach from 29th to 31st January.
Yearly presentation of PhD thesis and progress by PhD students to their PIs and CRC researchers with scientific and strategic discussions; slots for guest keynote speakers and further activities, exclusively organized and invited by PhD students.

Summer school with special focus on basic scientific principles required for the CRC, e.g. mucosal immunity, biostatistics, cancer biology

Self-guided short courses
The aim is to broaden the horizon of PhD students beyond their own working groups and the scope of their projects. This module consists in self-organized visits of the PhD student to other labs and institutes participating in the CRC.
- Mandatory: 3 visits within 4 years
- Duration: 1 day each visit | total of 3 days
- Organized by PhD students
These core curricular components can be supplemented by additional training opportunities which are
offered both within the IRTG and by external sources (e.g. EMBO or United European Gastroenterology (UEG) practical courses).
